Dilation gives your eye doctor a much wider and clearer view of the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye), the optic nerve, and the blood vessels inside the eye. Many serious conditions, including retinal tears, macular degeneration, glaucoma damage, and diabetic eye disease, develop in these areas without causing noticeable symptoms early on.
Without dilation, the view of the peripheral retina and far edges of the eye is limited. Dilation greatly improves detection of early or hidden disease, though it cannot guarantee that every problem will be found.

Driving in daylight with dilated eyes exposes you to sunlight that your eyes cannot filter properly. Glare bouncing off windshields, road surfaces, and buildings becomes overwhelming and painful. You will instinctively squint and turn away from bright areas, pulling your attention away from the road and surrounding traffic.
Even with sunglasses, dilated pupils allow excessive light to enter from the sides and top of the frames. This creates hazardous conditions where comfortable, clear vision is not possible and your risk of causing an accident increases significantly.
What to Do After Your Dilated Eye Exam
Planning ahead for the time after your exam helps you stay safe and comfortable while the dilation wears off. There are several practical steps you can take both before and after your appointment.
The safest choice is to arrange for someone else to drive you home after your exam. A friend, family member, ride service, or taxi ensures you get home without putting yourself or others at risk. Public transportation can also be a safe option, though you should be careful navigating stairs and platforms while your vision is temporarily affected.

We typically provide disposable sunglasses after dilation to help reduce light sensitivity and glare. These are designed to fit over your regular eyeglasses and block much of the bright light that causes discomfort. While they make you more comfortable, they do not restore your ability to focus or eliminate the vision problems that make driving unsafe.
Wear them both indoors and outdoors until your pupils return to their normal size. They are a comfort measure, not a substitute for having a safe ride home.
Beyond driving, other activities that require clear vision, good focus, or accurate depth perception should be postponed until you have fully recovered. Tasks involving machinery, detailed work, or situations where safety depends on precise vision should wait.
